Hiring “A” talent is critical to your business success. Great companies are made by “A” players. The true secret of managing a successful company is a well-guarded secret. The secret is to hire, promote, and retain only “A” players, but this is much easier said than done. One of my favorite resources is the book “Top Grading” by Bradford Smart. In the book, he has proven that only one-fourth of all employees hired or promoted turn out to be “A” players. The other three-fourths (the “B” and “C” players) eventually become mis-hires and mis-promotions. The cost of a staffing mistake has been estimated at fifteen times salary and a huge financial drain on the company.
